About the data

MOT Rank uses DVSA's anonymised MOT test data, published under the Open Government Licence. It covers every MOT test done in Great Britain. We use the 2024 data: 31,091,567 first MOT tests on cars (class 4). Retests, partial retests and appeals are left out.

Pass rate

A car counts as a pass only if it passed with no repairs. "Passed after repairs at the test" (PRS) counts as a failure, because the car had a fault on the day.

MOT Rank score

The pass rate divided by the pass rate of all cars the same age, times 100. Age is the year of the test minus the year the car was first registered.

Limits

Some cars are tested at more careful garages, and some owners look after their cars better. Mileage differs between models too. So the score describes how a model does in real life, not how it was built. We only show a model year when it had at least 100 tests.
